Short answer: everyday German phrases change with register, how formal you are. Use Sie and Guten Tag with strangers, shop staff and at work; switch to du, Hallo and Tschüss with friends, family and anyone under about 30 in casual settings. Germans react constantly with short words: genau, stimmt, echt?, na ja. Greetings also change by region: Moin in the north, Servus and Grüß Gott in the south.

Small talk
Small talk: Na, wie geht’s? Was machst du so?
German small talk is short and direct. Wie geht’s? is a real question: Germans may answer honestly, so a simple Gut, danke is fine but Es geht (so-so) is common too.
