How the counts work
- Words
- Any run of letters or numbers. Contractions (don’t) and hyphenated words (well-known) count as one word.
- Characters
- Every letter, number, space and punctuation mark. “Without spaces” leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Sentences
- Text ending in a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis. Abbreviations such as “e.g.” may add extra sentences.
- Paragraphs
- Blocks of text separated by a blank line.
- Reading and speaking time
- Based on average adult rates: about 238 words a minute for silent reading and 130 for a presentation or speech.
