Ukrainian Weather, Seasons, and Nature Vocabulary Reference

Weather is the universal small-talk topic, and in Ukrainian it carries a richer descriptive vocabulary than English speakers might expect. Ukrainians distinguish many kinds of snow, rain, and wind, and the four seasons sit inside a continental climate that swings from cold winters with deep snow to hot summers with afternoon thunderstorms.

The vocabulary therefore has to do real work in everyday conversation: a Ukrainian who asks Як погода? wants more than "fine," and the natural reply specifies temperature, precipitation, and wind in a few short clauses.

This reference catalogs basic weather adjectives (холодно, тепло, спекотно, зимно), precipitation terms (дощ, сніг, град, туман), the four seasons with their associated experiences, and the geographic vocabulary that names Ukraine's landscapes: степ (the steppe), ліс (forest), гори (mountains), and the specific Карпати (Carpathians) and Чорне море (Black Sea).

Each section includes example sentences with transliteration and English glosses, and the article ends with a quick reference, common mistakes, and an FAQ.

The Ukrainian weather lexicon has overlap with Russian but also notable divergences. Дощ (rain) is identical, but вітер (wind) shifts in stress and ending, and certain weather verbs differ: Ukrainian дощить (it is raining) is more common than the Russian construction идет дождь. Some words like завірюха (blizzard) feel more Ukrainian-specific in their everyday use, while older Slavic terms like хуртовина appear in literary contexts.

Basic Weather Vocabulary

Table 1: Weather adjectives and adverbs

Ukrainian Transliteration English
тепло teplo warm (adv.)
холодно kholodno cold (adv.)
зимно zymno cold (adv., regional)
прохолодно prokholodno cool (adv.)
спекотно spekotno hot (adv.), scorching
жарко zharko hot (adv.)
сонячно soniachno sunny
хмарно khmarno cloudy
дощить doshchyt it is raining (verb)
сніжить snizhyt it is snowing (verb)
вітряно vitriano windy
душно dushno stuffy, muggy
свіжо svizho fresh, brisk
морозно morozno frosty
туманно tumanno foggy

These short adverbial forms are the standard way to describe weather in Ukrainian. The construction is impersonal: Сьогодні холодно literally means "Today it is cold," with no grammatical subject. The adverbial form is neuter-like and indeclinable in this use. To attach a temperature, add + for above zero (+10) or - for below (-15) plus градусів (degrees, genitive plural).

Examples in context:

  • Сьогодні дуже холодно. (Sohodni duzhe kholodno.) = It is very cold today.
  • Завтра буде сонячно і тепло. (Zavtra bude soniachno i teplo.) = Tomorrow will be sunny and warm.
  • На вулиці дощить. (Na vulytsi doshchyt.) = It is raining outside.
  • У січні бувають морози до -20. (U sichni buvaiut morozy do -20.) = In January there are frosts down to -20.

The verbs дощить and сніжить are conjugated as third person singular impersonal verbs. They have no first person form because they describe weather, not human action. Дощило цілий день means "it rained all day"; the past tense agrees in neuter for impersonal verbs.

Precipitation and Atmospheric Phenomena

Table 2: Precipitation and atmospheric phenomena

Ukrainian Transliteration English
дощ doshch rain
злива zlyva downpour
мряка / мжичка mriaka / mzhychka drizzle
сніг snih snow
снігопад snihopad snowfall
завірюха / хуртовина zaviriukha / khurtovyna blizzard, snowstorm
град hrad hail
ожеледиця ozheledytsia ice on roads, glaze
іній iniy hoarfrost
роса rosa dew
туман tuman fog
гроза hroza thunderstorm
блискавка blyskavka lightning
грім hrim thunder
вітер viter wind
буря buria storm
смерч / торнадо smerch / tornado tornado
веселка veselka rainbow

Examples:

  • Іде сильний дощ. (Ide sylnyi doshch.) = A heavy rain is falling.
  • Уночі була гроза з блискавкою і громом. (Unochi bula hroza z blyskavkoiu i hromom.) = There was a thunderstorm with lightning and thunder at night.
  • Дороги вкрила ожеледиця. (Dorohy vkryla ozheledytsia.) = The roads are covered in ice glaze.
  • Після дощу з'явилася веселка. (Pislia doshchu zyavylasia veselka.) = After the rain a rainbow appeared.

The verb іти ("to go") is used for precipitation: іде дощ (rain is going), іде сніг (snow is going). This is parallel to English "rain is falling" and is the most common construction. Alternatively, дощить and сніжить are single-word equivalents.

The Four Seasons in Ukraine

Table 3: The seasons and their characteristics

Season Ukrainian Months Typical weather
winter зима грудень, січень, лютий сніг, мороз, завірюхи
spring весна березень, квітень, травень дощі, потепління, цвітіння
summer літо червень, липень, серпень спека, грози, тепло
autumn осінь вересень, жовтень, листопад прохолода, листопад, дощі

Ukraine's continental climate produces clearly differentiated seasons across most of the territory. The far south near the Black Sea has milder winters, with вологе тепло (humid warmth) at Odesa and Crimea. The Carpathian highlands have the longest snow seasons and the most pronounced summer thunderstorms. The central and northern plains experience the classic four-season pattern with посуха (drought) sometimes affecting summer harvests.

Examples with seasons:

  • Українська зима тривала і морозна. (Ukrainska zyma tryvala i morozna.) = Ukrainian winter is long and frosty.
  • Весна - мій улюблений час. (Vesna - mii uliublenyi chas.) = Spring is my favorite time.
  • Літо в Україні буває спекотним. (Lito v Ukraini buvaie spekotnym.) = Summer in Ukraine can be scorching.
  • Осінь в Карпатах - золота казка. (Osin v Karpatakh - zolota kazka.) = Autumn in the Carpathians is a golden fairytale.

The phrase золота осінь (golden autumn) is a fixed expression in Ukrainian for the brief, vivid weeks in October when foliage turns and the weather is dry and clear. Painters and poets have made it a national topic. Ukrainian painters such as Vasylkivskyi depicted the Ukrainian золота осінь.

For more on the names of months and their etymology, see the Ukrainian days, months, and time expressions reference.

The Ukrainian Landscape

Ukraine's territory contains four broad geographic zones: the степ (steppe) of the south and southeast, the лісостеп (forest-steppe) of the central belt, the ліс (forest) zone of the north, and the гори (mountains) of the Carpathians in the west and the smaller Crimean range in the south. Each zone has its own ecological vocabulary.

Table 4: Landscape and geographic terms

Ukrainian Transliteration English
степ step steppe (grassland plain)
ліс lis forest
гай hai grove, small wood
луг / лука luh / luka meadow
поле pole field
гори hory mountains
гора hora mountain
пагорб pahorb hill
долина dolyna valley
ріка / річка rika / richka river / small river
озеро ozero lake
ставок stavok pond
море more sea
болото boloto marsh, swamp
пустеля pustelia desert
ліси lisy forests
Карпати Karpaty Carpathians
Чорне море Chorne more Black Sea
Азовське море Azovske more Sea of Azov
Дніпро Dnipro Dnipro (Dnieper) river
Дністер Dnister Dnister river

Examples:

  • Карпати - це гори на заході України. (Karpaty - tse hory na zakhodi Ukrainy.) = The Carpathians are mountains in western Ukraine.
  • Дніпро - найбільша ріка України. (Dnipro - naibilsha rika Ukrainy.) = The Dnipro is the largest river of Ukraine.
  • Степ розкинувся на півдні. (Step rozkynuvsia na pivdni.) = The steppe stretches across the south.
  • Українські ліси багаті на гриби і ягоди. (Ukrainski lisy bahati na hryby i yahody.) = Ukrainian forests are rich in mushrooms and berries.

Степ is more than a geographic noun in Ukrainian; it is a cultural emblem. The Cossack mythology, the agricultural tradition, the very word for "Ukraine" (which some etymologies derive from "borderland" of the steppe), all draw on this landscape. Folk songs frequently invoke широкий степ (the wide steppe) as a place of freedom and longing.

Weather Verbs and Useful Constructions

Beyond the adverbs and noun phrases that describe weather, Ukrainian uses a set of verbs to talk about how the weather behaves. These verbs are usually impersonal (no human subject) and conjugate only in third person.

Table 6: Weather verbs

Ukrainian Transliteration English
дощить doshchyt it is raining
сніжить snizhyt it is snowing
гримить hrymyt it is thundering
блискає blyskaie lightning is flashing
дме (вітер) dme (viter) the wind is blowing
морозить morozyt it is freezing (cold)
тане tane it is melting (snow)
замерзати zamerzaty to freeze (over)
танути tanuty to thaw, melt
хмариться khmarytsia it is clouding over
прояснюється proyasniuiet'sia it is clearing up
розпогоджується rozpohodzhuiet'sia the weather is improving

The verb дути (to blow) deserves special note. Вітер дме з півночі (The wind is blowing from the north). The conjugation pattern is irregular: дму, дмеш, дме, дмемо, дмете, дмуть.

Examples:

  • Уночі дощило і блискало. (Unochi doshchylo i blyskalo.) = It rained and lightninged at night.
  • Сильно дме вітер. (Sylno dme viter.) = The wind is blowing hard.
  • Сніг тане під сонцем. (Snih tane pid sontsem.) = The snow is melting under the sun.
  • Надворі морозить. (Nadvori morozyt.) = It is freezing outside.

Plants, Animals, and Natural Products

Table 7: Common nature vocabulary

Ukrainian Transliteration English
дерево derevo tree
береза bereza birch
дуб dub oak
липа lypa linden
сосна sosna pine
верба verba willow
калина kalyna viburnum (national plant)
соняшник soniashnyk sunflower
пшениця pshenytsia wheat
трава trava grass
квітка kvitka flower
гриб hryb mushroom
ягода yahoda berry
тварина tvaryna animal
птах ptakh bird
риба ryba fish
метелик metelyk butterfly
бджола bdzhola bee

The калина (viburnum) and соняшник (sunflower) are both deeply tied to Ukrainian identity. Калина appears in countless folk songs and is associated with maidenhood and motherland. The sunflower is Ukraine's most recognizable agricultural and visual symbol; fields of soняшник cover much of the central plain in summer.

Examples:

  • Берези - улюблені дерева в українській поезії. (Berezy - uliubleni dereva v ukrainskii poezii.) = Birches are beloved trees in Ukrainian poetry.
  • Соняшники тягнуться до сонця. (Soniashnyky tiahnutsia do sontsia.) = Sunflowers turn toward the sun.
  • Ми збирали гриби в лісі. (My zbyraly hryby v lisi.) = We were gathering mushrooms in the forest.

Common Mistakes

  1. Confusing холодно with зимно. Both mean "cold," but зимно is more regional / dialectal (especially western Ukrainian) and холодно is the standard. In western Ukraine you will hear both.
  2. Mistaking жарко (hot weather) for гарячий (hot to the touch). Use жарко for ambient temperature ("It's hot today" = Сьогодні жарко). Use гарячий for objects that are physically hot (гаряча кава = hot coffee).
  3. Wrong verb for precipitation. Saying дощ іде is fine; saying дощ ходить is wrong. The verb is іти, not ходити, for falling weather.
  4. Mistranslating веселка as "fun" or "merry". Веселка is "rainbow," derived from the root for "joyful" but lexically distinct.
  5. Saying море for any large body of water. Море is specifically a sea or ocean. Озеро is a lake. Ставок is a pond. The word океан exists for ocean.
  6. Treating Карпати as singular. Карпати is grammatically plural (like "Alps" in English) and takes plural agreement: Карпати красиві, not Карпати красива.

Frequently asked questions

How do I ask 'What's the weather like?' in Ukrainian?

Яка сьогодні погода? is the standard question. Reply with adverbial forms: Сьогодні тепло і сонячно (today it’s warm and sunny).

Why does Ukrainian use the verb іти for rain?

The metaphor ‘rain goes / walks’ is shared across Slavic and many other languages. It treats precipitation as moving downward. Single-word дощить also works.

What is the difference between гора and горб?

Гора is a proper mountain; горб or пагорб is a hill. The Carpathians are гори; rolling terrain near Kyiv has пагорби.

Is калина a fruit, a tree, or a symbol?

All three. The viburnum is a shrub producing red berries in autumn. Symbolically it represents Ukraine and motherland. The song Ой у лузі червона калина became an anthem during the war.

How do I describe a snowy day?

На вулиці сніжить і дме холодний вітер (outside it’s snowing and a cold wind is blowing). Add завірюха for a blizzard: Сьогодні справжня завірюха.

Are there special Ukrainian words for types of snow?

Yes: сипкий сніг (loose, powdery), мокрий сніг (wet, sleet), рихлий сніг (soft), наст (crusted). Skiers and farmers know more terms.

What does пилок mean in weather context?

Пилок means pollen, especially in spring allergy season. У мене алергія на пилок means ‘I have a pollen allergy.’
